IT’S A KNOCK-OUT!
SAVE THE TOOTH

What to do if an Adult” tooth is knocked out
A baby tooth shouldn’t be put back – it’s for the Tooth Fairy!
The best chance a tooth has is to be replaced back into the socket immediately – the quicker the better!
- Find the tooth - Hold it by the crown (the broad part of the tooth usually visible in the mouth). Don’t touch the pointed end.
- If the tooth is dirty – gently rinse the dirt off. Don’t scrub or rub the tooth.
- If the tooth is clean – hold it by the crown and gently push the root back into the socket with the flat face of the tooth facing out and the inside part facing into the mouth – compare it to the other front tooth remaining in the mouth. This is usually painless if done immediately after the accident
- Hold the tooth in place – ask the person to bite gently on a handkerchief.
- Go to the dentist straight away – If this is not possible go to your hospital and ask for advice.
If you can’t put the tooth back:
1. Keep in moist – place the tooth in cold milk or have the person spit into the cup to cover the tooth.
Do not wrap it in anything.
Do not handle by the root (the pointed end).
Do not place in disinfectant.
Do not rub the tooth.
Do not allow the tooth to become dry.
2. Go to your dentist immediately. If this is not possile go to your hospital and ask for advice
Always ensure the tetanus cover is up to date
