Under 14s on Ice!
Name a Skilful, Fast, Furious, Fun sport – Hurling? – maybe
but on Sat Dec 6th the KC U14 Hurlers decided to check out the sister sport – Ice Hockey. In a novel joint venture with the Dublin Rams – they travelled to the Dundalk Icedome to play the Dundalk Bulls.
The Dublin Rams (Dublins Premier Ice Hockey Outfit)
are backboned by Canadians, 2 Americans, 2 Czechs but also have some home grown talent Its obvious they really enjoy their sport and want to promote it.
So It was fitting that we had a crisp, frosty but bright day as we commuted into town on the Luas. Embarking at Sandyford we were assured of seats and navigated thru the shoppers to Ormonde Quay
Our boys went along open minded and with a good interest in this contact sport.
As the rams guys arrived we got an opportunity to study the equipment the ice hockey being much longer that most expect. The traffic snarl-up jeopardized our opportunity to get on the rink for a quick skate.
After a meal we sat to watch the game significantly bolstering the away team support. Previously the Rams have had very close games with the DundalkBulls
But it was one of those disappointing days when the Rams got off to a bad start and suffered a lot at the hands of the referee (not always right but never wrong) – as it happened they only won out on the supporters contest. We were able to appreciate the skills on display and it certainly is a fun sport to either play or view.
You never know - an eccentric millionaire benefactor might convert our all weather pitch to have a pulley system that magically rotates into an ice rink – Dream On!
A parting thanks to the Dublin Rams for their hospitality and better luck in your return match in January!
