2010 Adult Hurling Championships Start

Body

Wednesday 28th April 2010 marked the opening of the 2010 adult hurling championships.

In Silverpark the intermediates played host to Whitehall Colmcille, trained by former Dublin player, Johnny McGurk. This was a game of alternating scoring spurts. After ten minutes Crokes led 0-4 to 0-1. Then came three points and a goal on the trot for the visitors. A Sean McGrath long range free steadied the Kilmacud ship. For the remainder of the half Crokes outscored their opponents 1-5 to 0-1, to leave it 1-11 to 1-5 at the break.

An inspirational Niall Mulligan point and a poacher’s goal from Naomhan O’Rearden in the twenty eight minute were the standout scores. The pendulum swung the other way for the first eleven minutes of the second half, at the end of which the score stood at 1-12 to 2-8, the Colmcilles goal coming from a penalty. Two Sean McGrath frees and a Shane O’Rorke minor regained the initiative by the fifty second minute. A pair of Whitehall overs reduced the gap to two points (1-15 to 2-10). The clinching score came in the fifty seventh minute as Daibhi de Paor scooped to the net for Crokes. A fine point from substitute, Liam Cantwell, completed the scores tally. A late goal for Whitehall led to a few anxious minutes as the contest concluded 2-16 to 3-10 in Crokes favour.

Among the more impressive for the winners were Brian Hanamy, Shane O'Rorke, Niall Mulligan, Alan Tiernan and veteran Daibhi de Paor.

Team: R Tighe, S McNicholas, F Garvey, D Byrne, J Doughan, B Hanamy, E de Paor, S O’Rorke (0-3), N Mulligan (0-1), E O’Byrne, A Tiernan (0-4), B O’Leidhin (0-1), N O’Rearden (1-0), D de Paor (1-1), S McGrath (0-5, f-5). Subs: D McGovern for E O’Byrne (45 mins), B O’Carroll for B O’Leidhin (49 mins), L Cantwell (0-1) for N O’Rearden (57 mins).

The same evening the Junior As’ trip to Tymon Park North was not as fruitful, as they lost by three points to St Judes (1-18 to 2-12) in their opening championship game. The sides were level 0-7 each at the interval, Crokes having recovered from a six point deficit.

There were good performances from Dave Canny at full back, Joe Walsh, midfield, and substitutes Conor Caulfield (1-1) and Alex Pilkington (1-0) while Dara Burke pointed eight frees.
