Seniors Back on Track
The seniors got their championship campaign back on track with a 1-10 to 1-8 win over Faughs in the Saturday evening (8th May 2010) throw in at Silvepark.
Crokes raced into an early lead thanks to points from a sideline cut (Donal McGovern), a free (Fergal Armstrong) and a flicked goal from Sean McGrath (see the video below!). By the tenth minute Faughs had reduced the margin to three, 1-2 to 0-2. In the ensuing thirteen minutes Crokes outscored their opposition by two points to one. By then the Kilmacud side had recorded six wides and were to add three more before the short whistle. In the run up each team raised a white flag. The Crokes score coming from neat combination by Rory O’Carroll, Fergal Armstrong, James Burke and Barry O’Rorke. It was 1-5 to 0-4 at the tea break.
O’Rorke resumed the scoring two minutes into the second instalment. Next McGrath split the posts with a 65 and hopes rose Crokes might pull away. If they did they were unfulfilled as the half turned into a battle of attrition. By the thirty seventh minute there were just two points in it following a Faughs point and goal. Moments later Crokes hearts were in mouths as a Faughs effort shaved the foot of the post. The Tymon outfit brought it down to the minimum coming up to the three quarter mark. Donal McGovern, who put in a tireless hour, won the puck out and set up Barry O’Rorke for a vital point. Shortly after the wing forward scored his fourth of the night and there were three points between the sides, 1-9 to 1-6. Faughs kept at it and were rewarded with two points. They might have had more if their free taking had been more accurate. With the final whistle looming McGovern again won a puck out and converted the win into a point to give Crokes some breathing space. Three minutes of injury time were played during which time a Crokes player received a red card as a result of his intervention in a goalmouth “schemozzle” while Faughs sent a 65 wide. The conclusion was greeted by the home crowd with a sense of relief and satisfaction at the both the result and the gritty performance of the winners.
Throughout the hour MacDara O’Hogain was solid in goal and the full back line of Gary McMorrow, Niall Corcoran and Adrian Grogan repelled all boarders. Rory O’Carroll and Ronan Walsh also contributed strongly to the defensive effort. Up front Donal McGovern showed exemplary leadership and Barry O’Rorke’s score taking was of a high order.
