U12s in Wexford for Lá na gClub

Body

In the Irish Times of Monday May 11th, Tom Humphries lists his “125 reaffirmations of the one true faith” reflecting on 125 years of the GAA’s existence.  To quote number 121: “Is there anything as viscerally stirring, as boneshakingly exciting and quintessentially part of us as a great comeback in a great game of hurling on a fine summer's day. There is not!”  Well the Kilmacud Crokes U12 hurlers gave us exactly that on two pitches amid the Lá na gClub celebrations in Piercestown, Wexford – home of the St. Martin’s GAA club.

Our A team had a tough match against the St Martin’s equivalent with all players competing hard for every ball.  Scores were hard to come by and at half time  the scoreline showed 0-2 a piece.  St. Martins had the benefit of a strengthening breeze in the second half which contributed to two early goals when Crokes could only manage one Alex Considine point.  They kept up the pressure and with another goal looked out of sight.  Kilmacud Crokes moved Cillian Fleming into goal and switched Conor O’Dwyer out to corner forward.  The switch had quick effect with a brace of points from Conor O’Dwyer.  They were followed by a Callum Pearson goal and things were looking up for the visitors.  A well finished goal by Johnny Maher put the scoreline at St. Martins 3-2 Kilmacud Crokes 2-5 (11 points each)!  St Martins were rattled but managed to keep their composure to put over the winning point just before the final whistle.

The Kilmacud Crokes B team were remarkably also beaten by a single point – again clawing back a lead from their opponents. This was a great day in the Wexford sunshine and our hosts were both welcoming and impressed with the high standard of hurling.  It’s fair to say that regardless of the results both clubs benefited from the experience.  We look forward to meeting again later in the season.
