Seniors League Opener

Body

On Sunday 20th March, the 2011 hurling season truly kicked off with the first round of the league against Faughs in Tymon North.  With a weakened squad due to Dublin commitments, injuries and holidays, there were three players making their Senior debuts.  In a highly entertaining and intensely competitive first half, Crokes were 5 points behind at the break with Faughs leading 1 - 6 to 0 - 4.

The second half continued where the first half had finished with both teams battling hard all over the pitch.  Crokes started the half brightly and scored three unanswered points, but despite dominating the next 15 minutes, Crokes only managed to score one point while Faughs scored three.  A fortuitous goal from Barry Mulligan with 5 minutes left on the clock reduced the margin to one point but Faughs were able to keep their noses in front and at the final whistle were two points to the good with a score of 1 - 11 to 1 - 09.

Despite the loss, it was a good performance from Crokes and it was heartening to see how well the three debuts handled themselves.

Team: - Matt Collins, Shane O'Rourke, William McEvoy, Adrian Grogan, Gary Melican, Jack Doughan, Gary McMorrow, Dillon Mulligan, Barry Mulligan (1-1, f-1), Shay Gillen, Declan Browne (0-2, f-1), Darren McVeigh (0-1), Naomhan Reardon (0-1), Kevin O'Loughlin (0-3, f-1), Alan Tiernan (0-1).  Sub: Fergal Armstrong for Gillen (51 min).
