U16s excel in Camlough Tournament
The U16's, with a contingent of U15's and U14's, travelled to Camlough/Bessbrook in Armagh to participate in an excellent and very well organised tournament on Saturday 13 August. They played three matches, winning them all relatively comfortably on the day.
The first match against Ballygalget was probably the toughest. At half time Crokes were up 1-08 to 0-04. Ballygalget came back into the game in the second half, scoring 1-04. However, Crokes played the better hurling on the day, ending the match on a scoreline of 3-13 to 1-09.

After lunch - and a quick change of venue - Ruadhan (Co. Clare) were the next opponents. Crokes settled early and dominated throughout the match. At half time the score was 4-09 to 1-01 in favour of the travelling Dubs. Crokes ran out comfortable winners in the end, by 9-13 to 1-06.

The final match was against our hosts, Craobh Rua of Camlough, who had beaten Ruadhan in their previous match. A first half scoring rampage saw Crokes surge ahead, with the sliotar rarely crossing the half way line. At the short whistle the visitors were 2-14 to 0-00 ahead. after the break the home team notched up 0-04, while Crokes scored a further 6-02, finishing out with a scoreline of 8-16 to 0-04.
Scorers: C Fleming 4-00, S Bedford 2-05, D O Gallchobhair 1-04 (1f), D Paisley 1-00, M O'Dwyer 0-03, M Crowley 0-02, C McIntyre 0-01, R Hogan 0-01 (1f)
A mixture of U16's, U15's and U14's blended remarkably well and proved a very cohesive unit on the day. Goalkeeper T Murphy guarded the nets with aplomb. Backs A Ahearn, K Doyle, C Lonnegan, A O'Neill, R Horgan and J Maher kept the opponents forwards quiet throughout all matches. Midfielders M O'Dwyer and P Herlihy dominated and scored crucial points. Forwards M Crowley, C McIntyre, D O Gallchobhair, A Spollen, S Bedford and D Paisley notched up scores aplenty. Subs M Hogan, M Connor, S Crowley, M Redmond, C Fleming (playing outfield, rather than in goals for once, scored seven goals on the day) contributed significantly on a day when the full squad participated in a most rewarding trip.
After the matches concluded we assembled in Camlough's impressive clubhouse for a presentation by our most generous and hospitable hosts, who also provided lunch for teams, mentors and travelling supporters. We offer our most heartfelt thanks to Camlough and to the other participating teams for what was a very enjoyable trip. As the the manager of the Camlough team said during his speech, this was all about hurling. Hurling most certainly won on the day!
